City University

City University

City University is located in Northampton Square, Clerkenwell. The college building with the striking clock tower was built on St Johns Street in 1894. Formerly known as the Northampton Institute, it received a Royal Charter and became City University in 1966.

City University has a strong reputation in professional, business, education and research. The name "The City University" was chosen to reflect the institution's close links with the City of London. It was agreed that the Lord Mayor in office should be invited to be the Chancellor, installed annually at the degree ceremony in Guildhall. The current Chancellor is Alderman David Wootton, Lord Mayor of the City of London. The University's motto is "to serve mankind", which is fulfilled by the openness to new ideas that challenge or support current wisdom.

City is one of the most international universities in the UK with more than 21,000 students from over 160 countries. Nearly half of the students are international; the majority from outside of the European Union. The university currently employs over 2,000 staff from 50 countries. The diversity of the University plays a large role in its success in creative and cultural subjects; the 31 International Partnerships promote the many reliable study abroad programmes that are available.

Graduates of City University include Faisal Islam, who took the prestigious title of 'Young Journalist of the Year' at the Royal Television Society's Awards for Journalism and Penny Klein, who is the Co-Owner of Heidi Klein swimwear.

The social science building, which hosts Psychology, Sociology, Economics and Language and Communication Science departments, opened in 2004. It is part of City University's strategy to develop the campus to meet the educational needs of the twenty first century.

City University prides itself on its innovative approach to education. Its commitment to and passion for academic excellence contributed to its rank of 8th out of London universities (The Sunday Times University Guide 2011). In 2008, fifteen areas of academic activity were assessed as being of a quality comparable with the very best in the world in the national Research Assessment Exercise.

City University is positioned in the top 10 in the UK for graduate employability (The Times University Guide 2011) and for starting salaries (The Sunday Times University Guide 2011). This achievement is due to City's unique focus on both academic excellence and business and the professions.
