Biography
I am a Speech and Language Therapist (SLT) with a background in Biology. After completing a BSc degree in Biology at the University of York, I went on to complete the Post Graduate Diploma in Speech and Language Therapy at City University.
As an SLT student I had placements in a variety of settings including several mainstream primary schools where I worked with children with Specific Language Impairment (SLI), children who had been diagnosed with Autistic Spectrum Disorder (ASD) and children with cognitive impairments.
During my school placements I used a wide variety of language assessments to identify the children's strengths and needs and I also planned and implemented various language groups and 1:1 therapy sessions. I also undertook a placement with elderly patients in a psychiatric ward.
Currently I am working as a Research Associate in the exciting Enhancing Language and Communication in Secondary Schools (ELCISS) project. My responsibilities include:
- Assessing children using standardised and non-standardised/novel assessments.
- Recording and transcribing assessment results and entering all data.
- Assisting in the training and support of Learning Support Assistants (LSAs) in conducting the three therapy programmes.
- Liaising with school staff, including SENCO's, LSAs, and Teachers.
- Liaising with parents in order to obtain information regarding their children's progress.
